aA Present The Soundcarriers,The Maladies Of Bellafontaine & Nick Ellis (The Maybes?)

aA PRESENT:
THE SOUNDCARRIERS - LIVE
THE MALADIES OF BELLAFONTAINE - LIVE
& DJs WILL, LEGO & SOFT PRIEST

We are very proud to welcome The Soundcarriers to our September aA, currently on tour in support of their new album 'Celeste'.

This recent Guardian review sums them up pretty nicely...

"The Soundcarriers are hard to pin down. On the one hand, the Nottingham quartet seem offputtingly po-faced: vinyl anoraks steeped in obscure 1960s/70s library music, soundtracks and jazz, who state in their sleevenotes that "the reverb used on these recordings is 100% natural". (Celeste was recorded on tape in the band's own studio and mixed in a disused warehouse.) On the other hand, they are cheeky enough to title Celeste's opening track Last Broadcast, in reference to their debut album, 2009's Harmonium, being compared to Broadcast by all who heard it.

That influence lingers, especially in Leonore Wheatley's chiming vocals and the billowy melodies of Step Outside and Long Highway. But again, the Soundcarriers wrongfoot you: while Wheatley sings of escapism and hiding away, drummer Adam Cann and bassist Paul Isherwood puncture the dreamy mood with bold, strutting rhythms straight out of Can.
The result is an album at once free-floating and tethered tight"

Support is provided by The Maladies Of Bellafontaine, who we very much enjoyed at this year's Trip.

Way back in 2006 a coquettish little Welsh girl and her swarthy Spanish lover rustled up a blueprint which appeared to provide a solution to the world’s insipid musical malaise. Acoustic assistance was required and so the pair hopped atop the nearest hillside, bellowing to the heavens their request for likeminded hairy helpers. The clarion call was responded to by a quintet of tousled troubadours and The Maladies of Bellafontaine were forged.

Hark! As angelic vocals shuffle along to eggbound spanish guitar. Behold the cello, glock, synth and most cack-handed of backbeats. ”Hurrah!” cried townsfolk the world over, “finally we have a reason to de-muff our beleaguered ears.”

The Maladies of Bellafontaine reside in an old converted monastery in the celestial backwaters of Wigan, the seven members are woken at 4.30am every morning by the monks to undertake the daily routine of looking after the holy penguins and giraffes, before being flogged and then offered dry Weetabix, which they routinely refuse.

**JUST ADDED**

Nick Ellis, frontman from Liverpool's greatest ever band - The Maybes? - will open the show with a short set. 1st time live in Manchester, will be a good one...
